I am sure you have all heard the saying “The only things you can count on are death and taxes”… or something like that. And while that is true, I would like to add …death, taxes and change. Change is inevitable and that can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you look at it.
I was watching a show recently about Simone Biles, the Olympic gymnast, GOAT and a woman who publicly struggled in the last Olympics. Her husband made a statement that rings so true for me and probably many of you and our students: “You grow through what you go through”. Think about that. I know I am the person I am (who I like) today because of the trial and tribulations I experienced during all my yesterdays. There were successes and failures both of which were learning experiences.
All of us go through things. And it is easier looking back at those changes and realize that I wouldn’t have this if I hadn’t gone through that. Our students are going through the “this” right now. Those that have graduated have experienced a huge change and hopefully we have helped prepare them for their future. The students that we still have and the ones we will soon meet are weathering the same storms. What we need to do is help them determine how they are going through these storms of change. Are they in a “yacht, canoe or drowning” (another cool saying I saw on Nextdoor). Hopefully we can get them in a pontoon boat, big enough for all the support they will find out they have.
