The Thillen Education Foundation, in collaboration with Greene College & Career Academy (GCCA), recognized the latest recipients of the Dave Dollar Awards during its quarterly reception on Tuesday, Feb. 11. The event, hosted at GCCA, brought together career coaches, parents, family members, friends, and school staff to celebrate students for their exceptional efforts over the past quarter.

The Dave Dollars Award program is a unique initiative designed to reward students for their dedication and hard work throughout high school. These Dave Dollars transition into real dollars upon graduation from Greene County High School, helping students take the next step in their education or career. In addition to providing students with a career coach throughout high school, the program also offers earned financial incentives that can be redeemed after graduation.

Parental involvement recognized as key to student success

This year’s reception also emphasized the vital role of parental involvement in student success. As a testament to the importance of family support, 33 parents in attendance were each awarded $25 Dave Dollars to present to their son or daughter, reinforcing the significance of encouragement and motivation in achieving educational and career goals.

Over $100,000 in Dave Dollars earned during the 2023-24 school year

Throughout the 2023-24 school year, Greene County High School students collectively earned over $100,000 in Dave Dollar Awards. Additional awards and recognitions will be presented at the Senior Honors Night in May 2025.

Flexibility for postgraduation success

Students who earn Dave Dollars have the flexibility to utilize their funds based on their chosen path post-graduation.

  • Further Education – Funds are awarded as a scholarship to assist with college or trade school expenses.

  • Workforce Entry – Funds can be used to purchase professional supplies needed for their chosen career.

  • Military Service – Funds remain available for up to six years for educational opportunities, career advancement, or essential supplies.

Upcoming deadline for seniors

The deadline for GCHS seniors to submit their Next Step Fund or Career Start Applications is March 31, 2025. Applications are available on the Thillen Education Foundation website at thilleneducationfoundation.com under the Financial Assistance tab.
